It's actually more fun if you're actually there

On Saturday 10 January 2009 Ipswich Turf Club's race meeting coincides with the Gold Coast's Magic Millions race day. The Ipswich Turf Club will conduct a race meeting on Saturday 10 January 2009 which will be promoted under the terrific initiative of Queensland Racing, "It's actualy more fun if you're actually there".

This will be the seventh consecutive year for Ipswich racing on this date and the people of Ipswich continue to support the secondary Queensland meeting for the day.

As with the past couple of years, a family fun day will be promoted with free entertainment for the whole family.

The corresponding date in 2008 attracted a large attendance at the second meeting back from the Equine Influenza enforced interruption to racing.  Some mild weather combined with family entertainment and the Queensland Racing promotion will see a bumper attendance at Ipswich Turf Club on January 10, 2009.

ITC Chairman announces development plans

On 26 August 2008, immediately after the Ipswich Turf Club (ITC) 2008 AGM was held, an announcement of future plans for the premises was made to the members.

There are two stages to the plans with the first stage to see the building of a tunnel beneath the track off Wickham Street to the infield, relocation of stables and sheds to the infield, relocation and upgrade of the kitchen and amenities, and development of three hectares from Brisbane Road.

Stage 2 involves the development of the infield track.  The most suitable uses for this 16 hectare site situated in the heart of Ipswich and in close proximity to public transport will be planned during the next 12 months.

The feedback from all interested parties has been overwhelmingly positive to the proposed surplus land uses and possible future balance land uses.

Feedback from the overall Bundamba community, the Ipswich Thoroughbred Owners and Trainers Association and the wider Ipswich community have all expressed nothing but positive feedback on the proposals.

Consultation with interested parties will continue over the planning period to ensure all needs are met as far as possible.

Chairman Wayne Patch explained in the announcement that the ITC needed to look to the future after watching the affects on racing, the shifting economic trends, technology, and social changes of the past few decades.

In looking to the future, the ITC Board stated objectives that any changes must:

  1. Be in the long-term interests of the ITC and the racing fraternity;
  2. Be financially sound not placing the Club in debt;
  3. Replace facilities affected by either equivalent or upgraded facilities;
  4. Provide the Club with an equity interest and future revenue source from the completed development; and
  5. Consider the impacts of the development on the surrounding community with a responsible decision.

The planned timing of the development is to lodge the Development Applications by November 2008, obtain approvals by August 2009, commence construction in September 2009, and Master Plan the in-field during 2008 and 2009.

Prior to the announcement in late August, unopposed elections were announced at the AGM to ensure that the composition of the ITC committee remains unchanged for the sixth straight term.

This election again displayed strong approval from the growing membership base for the strategies being implemented by the committee.

Between the committeemen, there are 100 years of honorary service on the committee of the ITC, clearly indicating a common desire to promote the interests of the historic Club.

The composition of the committee remains as Wayne Patch (Chairman), Jeff McLean (Deputy Chairman), Liam Tansey (Treasurer), Councillor Paul Pisasale, Dan Bowden, Dr Allan Byrnes, Ray Leschke, and Brian North.
