13 June 2009 saw the running of another Ipswich Cup Day and previous records tumbled on a big day. The brilliant weather in the lead up to the day was on show again as records were broken on overall attendance, pre-sold ticket numbers, marquee attendance numbers, and the number of visiting horses to race.
There is doubt whether any other race meeting in Australia would have a greater number of infield marquee hospitality patrons. The infield was opened up in 2002 by the then and current Chairman, Wayne Patch and the growth in popularity of this "infield village" has vindicated that move 100%. The enormous number of patrons results in a logistically difficult job in supplying a village from nothing to fully cater for 6,00 patrons. However the enormous efforts of ITC staff in building the facilities for one day paid off in spectacular fashion.
Another record to fall was the attendance at the after party when Brisbane band Savvy entertained the massive crowd for two and a half hours. Other features of the day were the stirring performance of the Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band at the start of the day, and the high quality and strongly contested Fashions on the Field contest. Add arguably the highest class of racing at Ipswich for decades as it was, and all the ingredients for a fabulous day at the races are there.

Record Number of Interstate Visitors
As noted above, there were 33 interestate or overseas horses race on 13 June 2009 at Ipswich. This was a record number for the Ipswich Turf Club meeting and meant that 28.6% of runners were from outside Queensland. This total included 7 New Zealanders. In 2006 there were 27 horses from outside of Queensland at 23.6% of starters, in 2007, 23 at 18.7%, in 2008, 19 at 16.8%, to the 2009 figures of 33 at 28.6%.
In the Ipswich Cup itself, only 4 of teh 15 runners were from South East Queensland and these four included the winner Our Lukas who is trained by Robert Heathcote at Eagle Farm. Second placegetter Macknuckle went close to giving his Canberra based trainer Bernie Howlett a unique winning jockey / trainer double after he won the 1961 Ipswich Cup aboard the high class galloper of that time - Sharply.
A few New Zealand visitors managed placings including the Richard Otto trained pair Attackum and Our Nautique, and the Michael Moroney trained Syndrome. Of the interstate visitors, the Sydney based Clarrie Connors trained Dorf Command won the fillies and mares classic and there were placings to other Sydney based gallopers Bellagio Wynn, Bargaining, Derivative Receipt, and the two Canberra based gallopers Voice Commander and Macknuckle.
