Gai Waterhouse: Redemption at Ipswich

Redemption at Ipswich

Published by Gai Waterhouse Racing, 11/01/2015.

Every June in the small South West Queensland town of Ipswich, the Gai Waterhouse Classic is run and won. I am most chuffed that the Ipswich Turf Club have named a race after me and I will continue to endeavour to win the race. Ipswich is perhaps more a small city than a town. Throughout the city, the streets are lined with Heritage listed sights. Ipswich is renowned for its architecture, and although the community is only 40km from the Brisbane CBD, it may as well be a world away. It is the most beautiful place and it certainly has that real ‘Aussie’ feel to it.

Sweet Red

I decided to send my promising filly Sweet Redemption (Snitzel x Redeeming Lass) out to Ipswich on Saturday as there was a very suitable race for her and I needed the filly to garner some confidence. 1st up this filly was beaten just a lip after coming from the clouds late in the race. Next I decided to throw her in the deep end in a Group 3 race at the Gold Coast. She never got a shot at her rivals this day, and straight after the race I knew she needed to go back to the ‘bush’ against perhaps a touch lesser company, and record a win. And win she did! Everything went to plan on Saturday; young Travis Wolfgram followed my instructions to the letter and he gave his mount the perfect ride and the filly did the rest. I have always, ever since I took the reins from TJ, liked to give my talented horses a chance against weaker fields in order to give them a confidence boost. Sweet Redemption has always shown immense talent, but in several of her runs, she has been bumped and bustled and as such, she had lost a bit of her confidence. At the provincials, a good horse can get a bump or a check and still win, whereas the same horse in town might have to settle for 5th or 6th such is the competitiveness of every race at the minute.

Congratulations to the big group of owners that are involved with this filly. She has all the ability and I am confident this win on Saturday will bring her right on.She will shoot the breeze now for a week or so, then I will find another good little race for her to win. Well done also to Travis Wolfgram on a great ride. I like the way this young lad goes about things and he certainly ticked every box on Saturday. Gai xx
