Turf Chat: Community praise for turf club
THE Ipswich Turf Club was given the highest compliment by Racing Queensland chairman Kevin Dixon at last week’s launch of the Queensland Racing Winter Carnival.
Dixon said the reason for shuffling around a number of the carnival dates was primarily due to the success of the Ipswich Cup as a community event of the city.
He said the opportunity was being given to each of the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba to promote their major events similarly, by changing the dates of their race days.
The Toowoomba Weetwood Handicap Day has been pushed back to be a part of the carnival on May 2, unlike previous years when this meeting has been a couple of months prior to the carnival opening.
In previous years, the Weetwood Day has only been able to attract local horses due to its running at that time of the year.
The Caloundra Cup Day has also been brought forward to May 16 from its usual spot late in June.
This is to place that race day in the middle of the carnival rather than waiting until the end.
The Gold Coast kicks off the carnival on Saturday, Anzac Day, as the running of the Prime Minister’s Cup takes place.
As Dixon said last week, this timing gives the opportunity to all provincial clubs to promote their days to the community as has been the case at Ipswich for many years.
He said the ITC and city of Ipswich had done a terrific job of turning the Ipswich Cup into such a successful community race meeting.
