Turf Chat: Gollan bringing top formula to Ipswich
TOP trainer Tony Gollan had another memorable day at Ipswich when he collected another three winners.
His haul last Wednesday took his tally to 23 season wins at Bundamba.
This tally gives Gollan a clear lead on the premiership ladder over Matt Dunn who moved to 15 with another winner last week.
Gollan has enjoyed a terrific 12 months at Ipswich, winning the two most important races at the track in that time.
Gollan collected the Ipswich Cup with Brave Ali and the Eyeliner Stakes with Alma’s Fury on Cup Day in 2014.
The form of Gollan leading into the 2015 Cup Day in a few weeks makes him one to watch.
Gollan’s winners were Flautino, Stella Di Notte and Heart of a Warrior, who were ridden by Tim Bell, Jim Byrne, and Ryan Wiggins respectively.
The strength of the Gollan stable has recently been further boosted.
Jockeys are vying to become closely aligned to the in-form trainer.
It is no coincidence that Gollan has come to the fore during this current season at Ipswich as a majority of Wednesday metropolitan meetings have been held at the Bundamba facility. Such races carry higher prize money than any other race day except for metropolitan Saturdays.
Bell rode two other winners on the day aboard Matt Dunn’s Arthena Fire and Steven O’Dea’s Pasquinel, to move to 21 wins on the jockey’s premiership.
This levelled up with Byrne, who managed to pick up his 22nd win of the season and maintain a slender premiership lead when winning aboard Stella Di Notte.
Another strong card is planned for tomorrow, after which there are only two meetings at Ipswich prior to the Ipswich Cup on June 13.
These are Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, June 4.
