The Ipswich Turf Club has dedicated the month of October to raising awareness of the important issue of mental health. That culminates this Friday with the This Is A Conversation Starter (TIACS) Raceday.
Eight races are scheduled to be run on what unfortunately will be a rain-affected track. As of Thursday, the track was rated a Heavy 8. Hot days are forecast so unless we get an afternoon storm Thursday, we should see an improvement to the Soft range but it will still be sticky. The rail is in the true position.
Race 1 - 12:57PM THIS IS A CONVERSATION STARTER FOUNDATION QTIS 3-Y-O BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: A decent tempo should be set in the opening race with Sian Star looking like he can lead from Sailor’s Secret.
Gear Changes: Rebel News (2) Bubble Cheeker (Near Side) OFF FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME
Sailor’s Secret (1) was very good when winning over this course and distance last start. He settled second before taking over in the straight and proving too strong for a 1.5 length win. He rises 1kg to 59kg but Jimmy Orman will look to adopt similar tactics. He races well at Ipswich and looks the testing material again.
Sian Star (3) resumed with a tough win at the Sunshine Coast to break his maiden status. There was plenty of merit in the win given that he looked beaten but fought back strongly. He rises to 1350m for the first time but will be fitter second-up and can lead. Ben Thompson taking the ride is a confidence booster.
Champagne Tastes (5) ran on strongly to win in dominant fashion at Kilcoy over 1200m. She’s been racing well recently but this is a stronger affair that what she has faced at Kilcoy and Beaudesert. The rain-affected track is in her favour.
Rebel News (2) resumes here following an 18-week spell. He finished last preparation in style with a nice win over 1400m at the Gold Coast to break his maiden status. He has warmed up for this with a couple of trials.
On Top Selection: Sailor’s Secret (1)
Race 2 - 1:34PM BASE METAL FABRICATION Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)
Speed: A genuine speed should be set with Goodscent looking to cross from an outside gate. Miss Cinnamoncider will look to use the inside gate to advantage.
Gear Changes: Castaconi (1) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Goodscent (4) Cross-over Nose Band FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie FIRST TIME
Castaconi (1) will take improvement from her first race start at the Gold Coast. She was held up when looking to come wide entering the straight but worked home well for a 3.8 length fifth over 1200m. The rise in distance second-up to 1350m will suit. The addition of blinkers for the first time will have a positive effect.
Sounds Devine (7) settled back and took an inside run to finish third at the Gold Coast over 1200m when resuming. She was three-lengths ahead of Castaconi that day. She’ll be fitter second-up but the outside gate is far from ideal.
French Step (10) is on debut for Kelly Schweida. Didn’t show a lot of early speed in a recent trial but worked home fairly. Being a So You Think filly she’ll probably be better over further but respecting the stable and this isn’t the strongest race.
I Prefer Minties (5) is another first starter, this time for Tony Gollan. She’s had two trials leading into this so should have a good level of fitness to run well on debut. Drawn well and gets the service of Ben Thompson.
On Top Selection: Castaconi (1)
Race 3 - 2:12PM SWICH ON INC Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)
Speed: There looks to be good speed engaged here. Failed to Mention should lead the charge with a number of other horses getting involved.
Gear Changes: Failed To Mention (3) Blinkers AGAIN, Gallery Master (4) Cross-over Nose Band FIRST TIME, Gerardjoseph (5) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Visors OFF FIRST TIME, Master Tyler (7) Blinkers FIRST TIME
Master Tyler (7) resumes here and is having his first start for O’Dea and Hoysted. He’s warmed up for this with two trials. His most recent trial at the Sunshine Coast looked very good. He jumped to the front and dashed away for an easy 3.8 lengths. He’s finished in the placings in four of six starts and shown a liking for rain-affected tracks. He has a tricky draw but has the early speed to counter that.
Cash Me (12) is having his first start for Jack Bruce after racing with Maher and Eustace in Sydney. Prior to joining Bruce, in September he ran well to narrowly finish second at Forbes over 1400m. Bruce gave him a solid hit out recently in a 1200m trial so he’ll be ready to go here. The wide gate is a worry but the stable is flying.
Gerardjoseph (5) steps out for the first time for Tony Gollan after racing in Sydney with the Snowdens. He’s had two trials leading into this so will be fit enough. He raced over 2000m last preparation so may need the hit out here. The booking of top jockey Jimmy Orman is significant.
Failed To Mention (3) has only placed once in nine starts. That doesn’t fill one with confidence but he does get the benefit of the inside gate and early speed to take advantage of that.
On Top Selection: Master Tyler (7)
Race 4 - 2:47PM OXLEY GOLF CLUB BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (800 METRES)
Speed: It’s an 800m scamper so you can be assured they’ll go hard from the get go.
Gear Changes: Refero (3) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME
Refero (3) resumed after a long break over 1000m here. He raced outside the lead and hit the front in the straight only for condition to give out late. He’ll be fitter second-up and I don’t think the drop in distance is a bad move. At times through his career he has shown ability so he’s no slouch. Jimmy Orman should have him prominent in the run.
Deece Scent Kiss (9) chased strongly to score a narrow win over 800m at Kilcoy when resuming. It was a great run given she had to work from the outside gate. She’s never far away and does her best work on wet tracks. Will be competing for the lead.
Devil’s Rite (5) failed on a heavy track two starts back so won’t want a really wet track. He resumed here and did well first-up last preparation over this course and distance after costing himself the race with a poor start. Inside gate a bonus.
Orsetto (7) hasn’t won for 77 weeks which is a worry. However, his last two wins have come over this course and distance. He resumes here and has won two of six when fresh.
On Top Selection: Refero (3)
Race 5 - 3:27PM ICARE SERVICES AUSTRALIA Class 4 Handicap (1200 METRES)
Speed: Tolkowsky, Battle Through and Nowyounomi look most likely to lead at an average tempo.
Gear Changes: Battle Through (8) Tongue Tie OFF AGAIN, Visors OFF FIRST TIME, Silesian (9) Hanoverian Nose Band FIRST TIME
Tolkowsky (4) resumes here after an eight-week break. Last preparation he ran on well for a length second to Cherrypick over this course and distance. Two starts back he won over 1350m here proving that he races well at Ipswich. From barrier 2 he’ll get a great run for Angela Jones who is riding in terrific form
Shadow Of Time (6) has finished third in his past two starts at the Sunshine Coast. Last time out he ran on strongly behind Star Gamble over 1200m in heavy conditions suggesting that he is ready to win.
Expectant (2) stormed home four starts back to win over this course and distance. He was very good two starts back when finishing third at Toowoomba on Weetwood day. If there is adequate speed in the race, he’ll be running on strongly.
Euro Belle (1) resumes here following a 28-week spell. She’s had three trials leading into this first-up run so she should be well and truly ready to fire. She hasn’t won for a massive 92 weeks but this is an easier affair than what she has faced.
On Top Selection: Tolkowsky (4)
Race 6 - 4:04PM SIRROMET Class 1 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: Okalani will look to drive forward and lead from the inside. She won’t be alone with a number of others capable of adding speed into the race.
Gear Changes: Tabulam (1) Winkers FIRST TIME, Tuki Twelve (2) Cross-over Nose Band OFF FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME, Visors OFF FIRST TIME, Oronoco (5) Butterfly Bit FIRST TIME
Harmony Reigns (6) ran on well for third behind Kronenbourg at Doomben over 1350m two starts back. She then found the line strongly to break her maiden over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast. She’s only lightly raced so has plenty of improvement to come. Larry Cassidy can settle just off the speed before working home hard.
Tabulam (1) has been in the placings in his past three starts. Last start he found the front in the straight over 1350m at the Gold Coast but was picked off in the shadows of the post by Noble Cat. That horse was a touch unlucky on Wednesday at Eagle Farm. Drawn to get a great run.
Isla’s Day (7) found one better when finishing a half length second on a heavy Gold Coast track two starts back. Last start she wasn’t far behind Tabulam in the Noble Cat race. If she can overcome the wide gate then she can feature.
Tuki Twelve (2) resumes here for Gillian Heinrich after previously racing with Tony McEvoy. He’s warmed up for this with two trials. His only win came on debut so he can perform fresh despite racing over middle distances previously in his career. Also accepted for the last race.
On Top Selection: Harmony Reigns (6)
Race 7 - 4:40PM NUTURF BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: There looks to be good speed here with Dembe and Legend Rules looking to cross from outside gates. Bushido can also push forward.
Ocean Emperor (4) raced three wide, covering plenty of ground when 2.7 lengths fourth to Star Gamble over 1200m on a heavy Sunshine Coast track last start. He worked home well considering the tough run. He’s since had a tick over trial. He ran well when second at Canterbury when previously third-up. Drawn to get a better run here.
I Want One (3) finished off well for third behind Very Intoxicating last start at the Sunshine Coast. Very Intoxicating won well at Eagle Farm on Wednesday to frank the form. The start prior he finished third but was well beaten by Communist two starts back. That horse was second in a Group 2 last Saturday. Will get back from the wide gate and run on.
Dream Song (8) got too far back last start when finishing 3.4 lengths seventh behind To Love Somebody over this course and distance. Prior to that she was narrowly beaten again here over 1350m. She races very well at Ipswich.
Emmy Regina (12) finished off well over 1110m at Lismore for second when resuming last start. The rise in distance suits and she’ll be fitter second-up. Daiki Chujo has a habit of bringing the right horse to Ipswich.
On Top Selection: Ocean Emperor (4)
Race 8 - 5:20PM BUNDABERG RUM Class 2 Handicap (1666 METRES)
Speed: Chasing Jackley looks the leader off an inside gate. A number of others can push forward from wider gates to ensure a solid speed.
Gear Changes: Atlantic Royal (5) Blinkers AGAIN, Bubble Cheeker (Off Side) OFF FIRST TIME, Waikato (15) Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME
Absolute Charmer (1) went close when third at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m two starts back. Very Intoxicating was just in front of him that day and that horse has won twice since. Last start he stepped up to 1600m and proved too strong winning by half a length. The margin should have been further if he got clear when he wanted. Looks well placed here.
The Golden Soul (4) keeps improving at each run and should be close to reaching his peak here. Last start he worked home well along the fence to finish third to Salsonic over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast. Gets the inside gate and has Jasmine Cornish who has been riding well in the saddle.
Expresso Love (7) has been racing well this preparation finishing in the placings in two of three starts. She finished off well last start suggesting the extra distance here will be to her liking.
Chasing Jackley (2) finished a long last when last seen at the races. He has been given a month to get over that. Prior to that failure he was racing in great form including two wins in a row. Will go forward and be in this for a long way.
On Top Selection: Absolute Charmer (1)
