We once again host midweek metropolitan racing this Wednesday where eight races are scheduled to be run. Last Thursday a near perfect racing surface was presented and that again looks to be the case with just a few showers in the forecast for Tuesday before a fine day Wednesday. As of Tuesday morning the track was rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 6m the entire course.
Race 1 - 1:18PM FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB QTIS Three-Years-Old Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)
Speed: There’s not a great deal of speed engaged here. Northern Decree looks the most likely to take up the running.
Gear Changes: Daring Diego (1) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Everclear (2) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Gelded, Paienbara (5) Blinkers FIRST TIME
Sibylla (8) settled a long way back after drawing wide when first-up over 1200m at Eagle Farm. She worked home quite well to finish sixth to Drammatica suggesting the rise to 1350m here second-up will suit. She draws barrier 2 here which should see her settle closer given the lack of speed. It’s a positive that Jimmy Orman takes the ride at 55kg but will likely carry 56kg.
Northern Decree (4) resumed from a 19-week spell at Eagle Farm over 1200m. He was used early to find the front from the wide gate and understandably weakened in the run home. He’ll be fitter second-up. If he can dictate terms in front, he may prove hard to run down.
Daring Diego (1) was slow away when debuting over 1100m here a month ago. He was scrubbed up early and looked to be struggling a touch to keep up with the speedier sprinters but did finish off fairly. The rise to 1350m here suits and he should be better for the experience. Drawn to get a nice run and blinkers going on for the first time will keep his mind on the job.
Paienbara (5) copped a check out of the gates which forced him to settle at the tail of the field last start over this course and distance. He never really played a part after that. He gets the blinkers on for the first time which should see a change in fortunes.
On Top Selection: Sibylla (8)
Race 2 - 1:53PM TAB Class 4 Handicap (1100 METRES)
Speed: There looks to be plenty of speed engaged in this small field.
Luskin Hero (1) resumes here following a 25-week spell. He warmed up for this with a solid trial where he finished just behind Garibaldi after showing early speed. We last saw this guy finishing 4.5 lengths second to the flying Boomnova in a Class 6 Plate at Eagle Farm over 1000m. He finds himself in a Class 4 here and has raced well first-up in the past. Adin Thompson who claims 1.5kg should be able to settle in a prominent position and give him every chance.
Circularity (2) ran well when second to Le Palmier first-up in a Class 6 at Eagle Farm. He then started favourite but didn’t have the power to hold out Genzai The Wolf over 1200m. The drop back to 1100m should suit and he should be fitter third-up.
Wuddacuddashudda (5) wanted to pull last start at Eagle Farm which forced the jockey to lead. That cost him as he weakened in the straight. The start prior he won narrowly at Murwillumbah. Should enjoy the run of the race from barrier 1.
Doctor Teekay (4) was given a soft trial in preparation for his first-up run here. He loves Ipswich having won three of four starts on the track. He’s only had the one race in the past year when fourth to Plutocrat over this course and distance in April so monitor betting.
On Top Selection: Luskin Hero (1)
Race 3 - 2:28PM KINGSLEY LAWSON LAWYERS Maiden Plate (1100 METRES)
Speed: Consecrated should ensure a solid tempo off the inside gate. Azure Pride and Slick Shooter won’t be far away.
Gear Changes: Little Vista (3) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Slick Shooter (6) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME, King Kryptos (9) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Gelded, Consecrated (10) Norton Bit FIRST TIME, Pads (Front) FIRST TIME, Synthetic Hoof Filler OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME, Fee (13) Winkers FIRST TIME
Azure Pride (1) resumes after having over a year away from racing. Rob Heathcote has got plenty of work into him leading into this courtesy of two nice trials. He won the first of these by 4.25 lengths and looked to have more to give. He then cruised around for a close second to Spirit Queen. In four career starts he’s placed twice. He possesses good early speed so Ben Thompson should be able to settle handy and give him every chance.
King Kryptos (9) is on debut for Bryan Dias. He looked very good cruising to a four-length trial win late last month. Barrier 9 is sticky so he’ll need some luck and a clean getaway. Obviously has ability so should be fighting out the finish.
Cassimir (7) is a new addition to the Kelly Schweida stable after previously racing in Sydney with Kris Lees. He has never been on a good track but looks like he’d appreciate it. In his two runs this preparation, he has found the line strongly to finish in the placings on heavy tracks. Expect him to be running on for Jimmy Orman.
Yalla (12) won a recent trial in preparation for her debut. She showed great speed out of the gates so should settle in a prominent position here. Have to respect the Gollan stable and she gets in with just 52kg after the claim for Angela Jones.
I must mention Crazy Brave (8) who finished just behind Yalla in his last trial. He looked to easily have Yalla’s measure. Unfortunately he has drawn the car park which makes this a task.
On Top Selection: Azure Pride (1)
Race 4 - 3:03PM SIRROMET Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)
Speed: With Star Of Kings and Valentina Express drawn out and looking to cross, there should be good speed here. Others drawn in closer can push forward.
Gear Changes: Schmoozer (5) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Sharp And Hot (9) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Toff (11) Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Nose Roll FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME
Schmoozer (5) has had no luck in his three runs this preparation. He was a good thing beaten on debut at the Sunshine Coast when held up for most of the straight before savaging the line late to finish a close second. Last start he didn’t get clear when he needed to but found the line strongly at Eagle Farm for third. He draws out here but that may be a blessing for him and allow him to get to the outside in the straight and charge home. The booking of Jimmy Orman is a positive as is blinkers going on.
Aircraftman (1) was held up in the straight before running on well for third behind Drammatica at Eagle Farm last start. He was six weeks between runs that day so will strip fitter here. He’s drawn the outside gate which isn’t ideal but he’s capable of giving this a shake.
Valentina Express (12) will strip fitter after enjoying a nice run but fading in the straight when sixth behind Drammatica. Hasn’t run a bad race in three starts and should go forward from an outside gate and be in this for a long way.
Star Of Kings (6) has been well beaten but has placed third in all three career starts. Respecting the fact that trainer Clint Lundholm is bringing the horse up from Dubbo. Drawn out but has the early speed to cross and lead or be handy.
On Top Selection: Schmoozer (5)
Race 5 - 3:38PM GREAT NORTHERN BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (2150 METRES)
Speed: Grinzinger Knight and Barrymore will make sure that this distance race is genuinely run.
Gear Changes: Populist (2) Blinkers AGAIN, Past Tense (5) Pacifiers OFF FIRST TIME, Recall Events (9) Winkers FIRST TIME
Grinzinger Knight (4) was a class above when leading and racing away for a 9.31 length win over 2110m at Lismore. He went to town last start and was well beaten over 2431m at Eagle Farm. In a tricky race where all have their convictions, I’d rather be on this guy who will be out in front giving you a run for your money.
Populist (2) mixes his form and has not won for over two years. He beat home Grinzinger Knight last start by a few lengths and now meets that horse better at the weights thanks to Angela Jones’ 2kg claim. Blinkers go on which may sharpen him up but the fact he hasn’t won for 132 weeks is concerning.
Barrymore (3) has been in good form lately with two wins and two placings from his past four starts. Has run well over this distance in the past when with Chris Waller but that was close to three years ago. Should race on the speed and be in this for a long way.
Luvyouanytime (1) split the above two mentioned at Eagle Farm last start. He’d been racing in good form but recent runs suggest that he may be ready for a break as he has been up for a very long time. Drawn to get an economical run so can feature.
On Top Selection: Grinzinger Knight (4)
Race 6 - 4:13PM SCHWEPPES BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1200 METRES)
Speed: There looks to be an abundance of early speed in this race spread from inside to out.
Brocky (4) has come back this preparation in terrific form. Two starts back he surprised at good odds to run home strongly to win at the Sunshine Coast. Last start he again came with a powerful finish to narrowly miss the win over this course and distance. Liam Birchley has been spacing his runs a month apart and that is again the case here. Gets in with just 55.5kg after Jasmine Cornish’s 3kg claim.
Bad Education (8) rarely runs a bad race but also has only run once in 12 starts. Last start he looked the winner over 1200m at Eagle Farm but was picked off late by Larrikin Rogue. He looks to enjoy a great run on the speed.
Litermont (9) should be reaching peak fitness third-up and getting more accustomed to life in the Gollan stable. Last start she was held up in the straight over this course and distance when finishing 1.1 lengths fourth. Gets in with a light weight with Angela Jones’ claim.
Kosciusko (1) has been less than two lengths behind the winner in his past two starts when not having the best of runs. On those occasions Brocky and Bad Education finished in front of him. Drawn out and has a big weight to carry but can feature.
On Top Selection: Brocky (4)
Race 7 - 4:50PM THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT Class 1 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: Frozen Prince and Writrose will scoot along from the inside two gates.
Gear Changes: Dacxi Kaboom (11) Blinkers OFF AGAIN, Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME
Sounds Devine (4) looked a treat in the mounting yard prior to winning her maiden over this course and distance last start. She won in a photo but she streeted the rest with third place over three lengths behind. There was plenty of merit in the run given she raced wide and was green in the straight. She should be fitter third-up and can go back-to-back.
Writrose (5) was impressive in her first start after arriving at Annabel Neasham’s Queensland stable. She sat on the speed over 1350m at the Gold Coast before dashing clear to win by 4.3 lengths. Gets the benefit of the inside gate and should race on the speed.
Isla’s Day (1) was forced to settle at the tail of the field when drawing the outside gate over this course and distance last start. That cost her the race as she rocketed home down the outside to finish second by just under a length. She again draws the outside gate so could encounter the same problem.
Witch Day (6) showed a good turn of foot to break her maiden status at Toowoomba last start. She’ll be fitter second-up and the step up to 1350m is ideal. This is tougher but may have turned the corner.
On Top Selection: Sounds Devine (4)
Race 8 - 5:30PM EVENTS @ IEEC.COM.AU RATINGS BAND 0 - 70 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: Xerri can lead at a good clip with company from Liability and Bushido.
Gear Changes: To Love Somebody (12) Bubble Cheeker (Near Side) OFF FIRST TIME, Valley Of Dreams (14) Blinkers FIRST TIME
Noble Beauty (13) was unlucky not to win first-up over 1200m here. She was held up in the straight and didn’t get clear until too late when finishing second by half a length. She then went to Eagle Farm and raced wide but still boxed on well for a 1.55 length fifth at Eagle Farm over 1400m. She draws to get a sweet run here for Ben Thompson.
Da Party Gal (8) drew the outside gate when resuming here over 1200m. That forced her to settle at the back but she came with a powerful finishing run to claim the win. Noble Beauty was second. She has a good second-up record and also races well here. If the speed is on she’ll be getting home strongly.
To Love Somebody (12) was the forgotten runner when stepping out over this course and distance last start. In fact, when the rain came, his trainer considered scratching him. Lucky he didn’t as he steamed home to win. He loves this course and distance.
Tolkowsky (5) will strip fitter following her half-length second over 1200m here last start. He was two months between runs that day. He has a good record at Ipswich and did win over this distance here three starts back. Tricky gate but can feature.
On Top Selection: Noble Beauty (13)
