Leading female jockeys Angela Jones and Sam Collett starred at our seven-race meeting on Friday with two wins a piece.
Jones has enjoyed a lot of success in recent times with Tony Gollan and that was once again the case in the opening race of the day.
The pair teamed up with Giliana, a mare who was having her first start in 23 months.
There was certainly no sign of ring rust for the daughter of Capitalist who flew out of the outside barrier in the 800m scamper to lead all the way for a 1.6 length win.
The win was Gollan’s sixth of the year at Ipswich and took him to the outright lead in this year’s premiership.
Jones wasted no time adding a second win for the day when she piloted Uno Moon to a victory in the very next race, the BM70 Handicap over 800m.
As she did for her first win, she drove the Mick Lakey-trained gelding to the front from a wide barrier before hugging the dulux in the straight to win by a length.
Uno Moon is in a rich vein of form and the win kept his unbeaten record over the course and distance intact.
Jones’ winning double rocketed her to the top of this season’s Ipswich Jockey premiership with seven wins, two clear of her nearest rival Bailey Wheeler.
Collett is no stranger to winning the Ipswich Jockey premiership, having been crowned top hoop in the 2021/22 season.
The three-time Group 1 winning jockey climbed to third position on this season’s ladder thanks to double that started with Li’l Rex in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 800m.
Collett drove the David Murphy-trained colt hard out of the barriers but could cross and fence instead racing three off the fence.
A line of five horses entered the straight and it was willing, but it was the strength of Collett that was able to lift the son of Rothesay over the line for a head victory.
The second of Collett’s wins came in the final race of the day, the 0-58 Handicap aboard the Jack Bruce-trained Lavoni.
The popular jockey settled midfield on the Encryption mare before getting to the outside in straight.
Lavoni let down strongly but the vigorous urging of Collett got her across the line to win by a neck.
The local training partnership of Doug & Graeme Lane claimed their first win of the season on their home track when Twisted Mistress saluted in the Class 1 Handicap over 1680m.
Despite an already solid tempo, Jason Taylor injected more speed into the race by making a move down the back straight to take up the running on the four-year-old mare.
It proved a winning move as the $41 shot opened a good lead that proved a gap too far to bridge for her rivals.
While race favourite Miss Chenery chased gamely, Twisted Mistress had the race in the bag to win by 1.8 lengths.
Our Benefactor was slow away in the 1350m Maiden Plate, but he quickly found the front under Martin Harley.
Once that happened, it was all she wrote as the Bevan Laming-trained colt led them a merry dance and raced away for a 1.8 length win.
Rounding out the winners on the day was Kelly’s Landing who was given a typically strong ride by Justin Huxtable to win the Class 1 Plate over 1100m by 1.5 lengths.
