Metropolitan racing returned to Ipswich on Wednesday where Jimmy Orman and Tony Gollan were at the fore, landing themselves winning trebles.
The dynamic duo teamed up on two occasions with the first of their combined wins coming in the TAB Class 1 Plate over 1200m with Hurts So Good.
Orman settled towards the back after drawing an outside barrier before working forward on the home turn.
Despite wanting to lay in, the So You Think gelding let down powerfully with a furlong to go to put his rivals away easily for a 1.74 length win.
Race Caller David Fowler described Orman’s ride as perfect, and it is hard to argue with that statement.
Orman and Gollan were at it again in the very next race when they claimed the Great Northern Fillies & Mares BM65 Handicap with I Am Takingthelot.
Last season’s leading Ipswich jockey settled midfield on the four-year-old mare before expertly weaving a passage in the straight to win by three-quarters of a length.
Earlier in the day, Orman piloted Kenyada who looked extremely hard to beat in the Class 3 Handicap over 1680m.
The Chris Waller-trained filly had been competing well in black-type races and proved her class by never looking in doubt as she dashed clear to win by 3.74 lengths.
Orman’s trifecta of victories rocketed him to 22 wins for the seasons and four clear of his nearest rival in this year’s jockey premiership.
Gollan’s third win of the day came in the final event with Daytona.
Under Ryan Maloney, the son of Sebring showed an electric turn of foot to jump out of the ground from the back and blow past his opposition to win in a photo finish.
That was Gollan’s 19th win of the season and places him firmly in the driver’s seat to win his eight Ipswich Trainers premiership.
Apprentice jockey Jake Molloy prevented Orman riding four winners on the day when he successfully guided Cranky Harry in the Colts, Geldings and Entires BM65 Handicap over 1350m.
The Jack Bruce-trained gelding was heavily backed in from $6.50 to the $3.60 favourite and didn’t let backer down when he ran down Orman’s mount Jonny Da Wolf win by just over half a length.
This season it has seemed as if Jag Guthmann-Chester has helped himself to a win at every Ipswich meeting.
That was again the case on Wednesday when the Gold Coast jockey won aboard Rimbaud for Annabel Neasham.
The three-year-old gelding was well backed, and the market knew as he let down strongly to comfortably win the 1100m Maiden by 2.84 lengths.
Other winners on the day included Hokusai who overcame the outside gate and a market drift to win the opening race over the day over 800m for the Currie stable and the Chris Munce-trained Cryptoshare who enjoyed a great run before Justin Huxtable rode the monster of a horse hard to the line to win narrowly.
We will host another metropolitan midweek meeting next Wednesday, the 22nd of May.
