A COUPLE of Queensland carnival contenders were unveiled at Ipswich on Wednesday, where trainer Bevan Laming and jockey Jaden Lloyd stole the honours, combining for a winning double.
The pair combined to land the $50,000 Sacred Elixir – a two-year-old race transferred from Sunday’s abandoned Sunshine Coast turf meeting – with Call Da Vinci, who took down the Ciaron Maher trained hotpot Navy Pilot.
Call Da Vinci, a son of Stradbroke winner Under The Louvre, is now the winner of two from three and was trimmed up by TAB to be a $26 chance in their market for next month’s Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m).
Laming and Lloyd completed their double when former promising two-year-old Gin A Tonic bounced back into the winning list by taking the Class 2 Handicap as the $3 favourite.
The other feature on the card was the Barrier Reef Pools Provocative, a $75,000 race for three-year-olds over 2180m.
It has previously been used as a lead-up to the Queensland Derby or Queensland Oaks, with Provocative winning this race in 2016 before her Oaks success at Eagle Farm.
Chris Waller sent last start Wyong winner Existential Bob north to tackle this race and he stayed best to win impressively over the Kris Lees trained favourite Éclair Encore.
Existential Bob trimmed up to be a $26 chance with TAB for the Queensland Derby on May 31.
Earlier, the Peter Robl stable landed a good betting move when Without Rhyme won on debut under Jai Williams. The son of Lonhro officially started $3.50 after as much as $8 was bet earlier in the morning.
Conversely, the Adam Campton stable dealt punters a blow when Krakarib bounced back to winning form in the Benchmark 65 Handicap at juicy odds of $41 under apprentice Corey Sutherland.
Ipswich now has just two meetings (May 31 and June 6) before our big TAB Ipswich Cup meeting on June 21.
Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to book your spot at the Queensland winter racing carnival’s busiest raceday.
