The miserable weather wasn’t enough to dampen the enthusiasm of guests at two separate Ipswich Turf Club functions on Saturday as the new Ipswich Incentive Series was launched on the track.

While rain unfortunately plagued Derby Day at Eagle Farm, Ipswich was fortunate to be just on the fringe of the rain cell and while there was persistent drizzle, it wasn’t enough to stop the eight races being run and won.

Off the track, Cricket Ipswich hosted their inaugural raceday in the Grange Gardens, with some of the district’s best cricketers taking advantage of the off-season to have a ‘beer and a punt’ with teammates and rivals.

Upstairs in the Grange Lounge, Wounded Heroes combined with the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation for a well-received fundraiser. Organisers did a brilliant job decorating the room, with four-times Olympic Gold Medallist Libby Trickett the special guest speaker.

The golden run of the Chris and Corey Munce stable continued with a winning double, via Champagne Rouge (Siobhan Rutledge) and Around The Buoy (Tahlia Fenlon), who took out both staying races on the program. It was a nice little bit of cream on top for the red hot yard, after Cool Archie took out the $1M G2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Desleigh Forster shared training honours with the Munces, completing a winning double of her own via Simply Amazing (Sam Collett) and I’m Heroic (Corey Sutherland).

Fortunately the weather held off long enough to run qualifying races for June 21’s Ipswich Cup Day.

Around The Buoy’s win came in the Provincial Stayers’ Heat, before two heats of the Great Northern Ipswich Inventive were run.

Lights Of Paradise impressed under Brandon Lerena in taking the Class 2 1100m heat for the Barry Lockwood stable. In the following event, Whomsonever caused a boilover for trainer Kurt Goldman and jockey Tiffani Brooker in the Class 1 (1350m).

The first three placegetters in each of the Heats now secure themselves a place in the Great Northern Ipswich Incentive Final (1200m), to be run as a Class 3 Handicap on June 21.

Racing returns to Ipswich this Friday, June 6, where the highlight will be the final two qualifying Heats for the Ipswich Incentive.
