Meeting in Review – Wednesday 12 February 2025 New

Date: 13-Feb-2025

The cream rose to the top at Wednesday’s Ipswich Turf Club meeting led by Tony Gollan.

Gollan is an eight-time Ipswich Trainers premiership winner and is well on his way to a ninth title thanks to his three wins on Wednesday.

The Eagle Farm conditioner opened his account with Simply Excels in the first race, the Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap.

Wearing the distinctive High Calibre Racing green colours, Simply Excels flew out of the outside barrier to lead the 1200m contest for Jimmy Orman.

Despite being first-up, the Exceed And Excel gelding showed good fight to hold on and win by a nose.

Simply Excels defied a market drift from $8 to $14.

Gollan wasted no time in registering his second win for the day when Zoufani claimed the next race.

The Zousain filly was on debut in the Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap over 1200m and blew like a gale in the market, moving from $5.50 to $11 by the time they jumped.

That mattered little with Angela Jones eyeballing the leader all the way at a good speed before finding plenty in the locker to race clear for an impressive 2.7 length victory.

Gollan’s third and final win of the day came in the Get Out Stakes with Free Carry.

Guided by stable apprentice Emily Lang, the son of Bon Hoffa led all the way for a 1.6 length win.

While perennial eye-catcher Red Defcon cut the margin late, the result was clear early in the straight.

Gollan’s treble took him to 18 wins for the season, eight clear of his nearest rivals Matt Dunn and Rob Heathcote.

It was announced yesterday (Wednesday) that Orman would leave Queensland this Saturday to take up a short-term riding contract in Hong Kong but not before riding a double at Ipswich.

Orman’s second win came aboard the David Vandyke-trained Annie One Ready in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate.

The race was part of the rich Inglis Xtra Bonus Series where the winner receives a $100k bonus if they are a 2023 Inglis graduate.

Sydney visitor Insain looked well on his way to taking the bonus home with him when he skipped well clear in the straight.

However, he capitulated in the final furlong and Orman and Annie One Ready capitalised, charging home to win by 1.6 lengths.

Jones also recorded a winning double when she won the Class 5 Handicap with Surfers Royale.

The Billy Healey-trained gelding was able to settle on speed before running down Stanislaus for a narrow win.

Jones extended her lead in this season’s Ipswich Jockey premiership to three wins and took her 2024/25 tally to 14.

The Tenille Ranger-trained Enuff Pills is racing in great form and that continued on Wednesday when she won her third race in a row.

Just as she did last start, she showed an abundance of speed under Adin Thompson to put her rivals away early in the Benchmark 65 Handicap over 800m.

Champion trainer Chris Waller teamed up with Ryan Maloney to win the Benchmark 70 Handicap with Super Chilled.

Racing returns to Ipswich next Wednesday, 19th of February for yet another metropolitan midweek program.
