Ipswich Preview And Selections 19 October 2022

Date: 18-Oct-2022

For the third Wednesday in a row, we host metropolitan racing where eight races are scheduled to be run. Unfortunately the weather forecast isn’t favourable with showers a strong chance. As of Tuesday the track is rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 4m between the 1600m and 1100m and 6m the remainder of the course.

Race 1 - 12:46PM THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT Maiden Plate (2180 METRES)

Speed: The stayers kick the day off in a race where not a great deal of speed is engaged. Better Times and Gold Samurai look most likely to lead.

Many of these maiden stayers come out of 2200m race at the Sunshine Coast won by Bonloe last month and that’s a formline I want to avoid. That points me in the direction of Sandgate Road (5). He’s gradually stepped up in trip this preparation and put in his best last start when taking on 1800m at the Sunshine Coast. He raced wide on the heavy track but finished off quite well for a 2.8 length fourth to Rabbit Stu. He rises to 2200m here which should suit. Michael Cahill shouldn’t be too far away in the run.

Zeebling (7) finished just behind Sangate Road at the Sunshine Coast last start. She meets him better at the weights and will carry just 52.5kg after Jasmine Cornish’s claim. The only other time she raced over 2200m she finished second.

Enolaba (9) is only lightly raced so may have more upside than most of these. She was having just her third start when she worked home fairly to finish 4.1 lengths sixth to Rabbit Stu last start. Should race in a forward position with the light weight.

Solarosa (6) was well beaten by Bonloe two starts back before a better showing last start over 2200m at the Sunshine Coast. She was given a great run by Sam Collett and looked the winner before being run down late to finish second. Will be thereabouts.

On Top Selection: Sandgate Road (5)

Race 2 - 1:21PM BASE METAL FABRICATION Class 5 Handicap (1690 METRES)

Speed: In Agreement should run them along at a decent clip. Gentle Prince won’t be far away.

Command King (2) was very good when winning first-up at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m despite racing wide. Last start he wasn’t disgraced when 4.42 lengths seventh in a Saturday BM75 over 1400m at Eagle Farm. He prefers the cut out of the ground and that should be the case here. After drawing wide last start, he gets the advantage of barrier 1 here.

Gentle Prince (1) has turned his career around this preparation. He’s won four of nine including last start when leading and going on with it at the Sunshine Coast over 1600m. Wendy Peel and Pat Duff are a deadly combination and will look the winner in the straight here.

Reflect The Stars (3) is a former Victorian distance horse resuming for David Vandyke. She has had a trademark Vandyke soft trial leading into this. She ran some decent races down south but will probably need the run first-up. However, Ryan Maloney is in the saddle so the pair have to be respected.

In Agreement (4) has been disappointing recently but gets a chance to turn things around over a course and distance he likes. If he gets away with an easy lead he could give some cheek.

On Top Selection: Command King (2)

Race 3 - 1:56PM THIS IS A CONVERSATION STARTER RACEDAY 28 OCTOBER QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap (1690 METRES)

Speed: Birdonawing has the early speed to cross from the outside gate and lead. However, the task won’t be made easy with Dragon Song and Cherokee Girl also likely to push forward.

Gear Changes: Birdonawing (4) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Binding (5) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Classique Gal (6) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF AGAIN, Cherokee Girl (7) Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME

Binding (5) will enjoy the rise to 1680m here third-up. First-up she settled at the back and rattled home for second over 1200m on the tight Kilcoy track. She then went to Eagle Farm and caught the eye finishing off nicely for a 2.45 length fourth to Soothsayer over 1400m. Boom Court who was second in that race again ran well on Saturday. She can break through back in maiden company.

Birdonawing (4) has placed in five of seven starts but is still chasing that elusive first win. Last start she raced handy over 1350m here and was just 0.3 of length behind the promising Matriarch Rose. First time over this trip but gets the blinkers on for the first time.

Singer Sargent (1) settled back on debut at the Gold Coast over 1350m before finding the line strongly for second. He’ll have come on from that run and will be better for the experience. The extra distance looks ideal.

Dragon Song (8) turned in a good effort last start when leading over this course and distance and only being picked off in the shadows of the post. She should again race on speed and can give a shout here. Being out of a Hidden Dragon mare, the wetter the better.

On Top Selection: Binding (5)

Race 4 - 2:33PM SIRROMET Class 4 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Speed: Orbisyn can lead this field at a decent tempo. King Of The Desert and Abdicating next in line.

Gear Changes: Abdicating (4) Pads (Front) OFF FIRST TIME, Brave Enough (5) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) OFF FIRST TIME, Pads (Front) FIRST TIME, Dynamic Duo (8) Blinkers AGAIN

Orbisyn (1) started his career on fire with four straight wins. He returned last preparation and failed on the heavy going at Doomben. He then led and was run down when in the inferior ground over this course and distance. He returns here following a 17 week spell on the back of a nice trial win. He has to lump 60.5kg but is the class horse. Just won’t want it too wet.

Shamaton (2) weakened in the closing stages when resuming at Eagle Farm over 1000m. He traditionally improves second-up so we can expect him to bounce back here. Two starts back he was only a length or so behind Orbisyn on Ipswich Cup day after being held up. Angela Jones’ claim helps.

Andy (7) resumes here following a 29-week break. He warmed up for this with a nice trial. Yet to win in two first-up runs but does enjoy rain-affected tracks. He finished last preparation with a hard fought win in heavy conditions over 1195m at Grafton against older horses.

Dynamic Duo (8) was doing his best work late when fifth to Gemelon Bolt over 1000m last start. He beat home Shamaton that day. First-up this preparation he won at Eagle Farm in a no metro win race so at his best he could threaten.

On Top Selection: Orbisyn (1)

Race 5 - 3:13PM NUTURF BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1010 METRES)

Speed: No shortage of speed here. Commandeering can lead but will have company from Preach, Rexx, All Stashed Up and Rubyexpress.

Gear Changes: Storm Attack (5) Blinkers AGAIN, Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Control Bit FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie OFF AGAIN, Dublin De Quo (6) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs FIRST TIME, Nose Roll FIRST TIME

All Stashed Up (9) impressed when winning over 1000m here first-up. She really found the line strongly with jockey Angela Jones suggesting post-race the mare was up to Saturday grade. She enjoys racing at Ipswich and should enjoy a great run from barrier 3. She’ll again carry a light weight with Jones’ claim.

Preach (8) will be fitter second-up after finishing 3.3 lengths fourth to Amity Gal at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m. He matched motors with the speedster but weakened late. He won impressively here when on debut last preparation. Drawn to get a great run.

You’ll Be Mist (4) has found form for Darryl Hansen with wins in her past two starts at the Sunshine Coast. Loves this distance having won five and placed in four others from ten starts. Gets the benefit of the inside gate and the state’s leading hoop Jimmy Orman.

Swan Island (1) has been freshened after finishing towards the back in the Kilcoy Cup. He recently looked good winning an Eagle Farm trial. Wide gate is not ideal but can give this a shake fresh on his home track.

On Top Selection: All Stashed Up (9)

Race 6 - 3:53PM ICARE SUPPORT SERVICES Class 1 Handicap (1690 METRES)

Speed: Makalu should be able to counter the wide gate and lead. Petralia won’t be too far away.

Gear Changes: Style Seeker (2) Winkers AGAIN, Cairdeas (8) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Lucamour (9) Blinkers OFF AGAIN

Dutch Gold (1) broke through for a strong maiden win two starts back at Doomben. Last start he jumped to a Class 3 and was never on the track when competing over this course and distance. Despite that he fought on well and hit the lead late, only to be run down by A Big Chance. He doesn’t run a bad race this guy and back to a Class 1 looks right in this with Jim Byrne in the saddle. Should be prominent in the run.

Savagal (3) resumed over 1350m here last start where she found the line well for a 0.7 length fourth. She’ll appreciate the rise in distance second-up. Her only win came when second-up at the start of her career where she defeated Dutch Gold. She’ll get back and attack the line.

Cairdeas (8) is having her first start for O’Dea and Hoysted after previously racing with Joe Pride in Sydney. Her past two races have seen her finish well back on heavy tracks but prior to that she was racing well. Three starts back she ran on strongly to just miss the win at Gosford over 1600m. An effort like that will see her challenge for the win.

Makalu (6) arrives at Annabel Neasham’s Brisbane stable after competing down south. He’ll find this a lot easier than the Listed Super Impose Stakes that he finished 8.9 lengths behind Mr Maestro in last start. Two starts back he won his maiden at Newcastle over 1400m. Ben Thompson can lead and give them something to catch.

On Top Selection: Dutch Gold (1)

Race 7 - 4:33PM NEED A YARN? TIACS SUPPORT LINE 0488 846 988 Class 2 Plate (1200 METRES)

Speed: A good tempo should be set with Lady Rain looking to cross from the outside gate and Yourjokingme Right and Our Calantha going forward.

Gear Changes: Claudius (4) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME, Chica Bonita (11) Blinkers AGAIN

Dark Horse (1) powered through the bog Gold Coast track two starts back to run down Ralphie and win over 1100m. He then stepped up to Class 3 company and chased bravely but just couldn’t catch Amore Veloce over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast. He finished a half length behind that horse and it ran a nice race in town on Saturday. He drops back to his right class here and should enjoy a sweet run for Noel Callow.

Our Calantha (2) can provide Team Edmonds with the quinella. This guy won on debut way back in May 2020. He returned for his second start at the Gold Coast at the start of this month and proved a class above, racing away for a length win. 1200m suits second-up and Andrew Mallyon who also has returned to racing in good form can settle in the leading pack.

Litermont (8) was slow away when having her first start for Tony Gollan here over 1100m. Despite that she worked home well to finish second to Cossie. She usually jumps cleaner so expect her to settle close to the front from the inside gate for Angela Jones who claims 2kg.

Yourjokingme Right (3) was good when resuming with a second to You’ll Be Mist over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast. He came wide on the turn and finished off well suggesting that the 1200m here will suit. He has a good second-up record and should be handy.

On Top Selection: Dark Horse (1)

Race 8 - 5:12PM OXLEY GOLF CLUB BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Coodarady, Magic In Me and Terrius will ensure that a solid speed is set here.

Gear Changes: Metal Rock (11) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, To Love Somebody (13) Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME, Tick Tock Queen (14) Winkers AGAIN

Majestics Request (5) resumed with a 2.4 length fifth to Amore Veloce at the Sunshine Coast over 1200m and there was plenty of merit in the run. He was last out of the gates and then was held up in the straight but once clear attacked the line, He’ll appreciate the rise in trip and although hasn’t won here, he has placed in all starts. With a clean getaway he can settle closer than normal from the inside gate.

TIck Tock Queen (14) did a few things wrong but proved too strong in the run home when winning first-up at the Sunshine Coast. That was her maiden so this is harder but she’s in the right stable and should get a nice run from barrier 5.

Dream Song (8) saves her best for Ipswich. Last start Wendy Peel saved ground turning for home before the mare let down nicely to just miss the win despite being in the worse part of the track. That was a stronger grade race than this.

Coodarady (6) is having his first start in Queensland for Chris Waller after three runs in Sydney. He won narrowly on debut before having excuses his next two. Won a trial over Anamoe in preparation for this. He’ll give them something to catch.

On Top Selection: Majestic Request (5)
