The Spring Carnival rolls on in Melbourne this Thursday with the ladies taking centre stage on Oaks Day. Here in Queensland we host an eight-race card at the Ipswich Turf Club.
The track as of Wednesday is rated a Soft 6. With fine weather forecast over the coming days we should see the track rating improve to somewhere approaching a Good 4. The rail is 3 metres the entire course.
Race 1 - 12:43PM SIRROMET QTIS Three-Years-Old Maiden Plate (800 METRES)
Speed: There’s a touch of uncertainty around the speed map with half the field on debut but it’s fair to say given it’s over 800m, it will be willing.
Gear Changes: Boardie (1) Bubble Cheeker (Off Side) FIRST TIME, Hidden Wealth (2) Gelded, Johnny Deep (3) Cross-over Nose Band FIRST TIME, Gelded, Willy Ever (6) Pacifiers FIRST TIME, Doom Diva (7) Blinkers FIRST TIME, My Day (8) Stallion Chain FIRST TIME, Singapore (11) Lady Cross-over Nose Band FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME
Hidden Wealth (2) looks the horse to beat here. Unfortunately he’s drawn an outside gate and also nominated for Sunday’s Sunshine Coast meeting so it’s unknown at time of writing whether he races here. The Tony Gollan youngster has won two trials in good style in preparation for his debut. The first of these he accounted for Roll Up who has since won impressively here and in town.
Champagne Torque (15) trialled well before her debut at the Sunshine Coast. She led over 1000m but weakened out of it. She’ll be better for the experience and will also appreciate dropping back to this distance. Ben Thompson sticks and should give her a nice run from barrier 5.
On The Target (4) put in his best race when dropping back to 800m at Kilcoy last start. He raced outside the lead and was only beaten by 0.2 of a length. If he had the inside, the result would have been reversed. He gets the barrier 1 here which gives him every opportunity to break through.
Singapore Lady (11) was sent back to the paddock after trialling well in July. Suspect she has improved since then. Respecting the Sears stable and the appointment of Kyle Wilson-Taylor to ride.
On Top Selection: Hidden Wealth (2)
Race 2 - 1:23PM FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: There doesn’t look a great deal of speed on paper. However, Scat’s Surfer Girl, Spressi and Shadow Project could add speed to the race as they try to counter wide gates.
Gear Changes: Shores Of Gold (6) Nose Roll FIRST TIME, Pamplona Lad (8) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME
Scat’s Surfer Girl (7) settled handy and ran home well but was no match for Alamira when finishing second at the Sunshine Coast over 1200m first-up. It was her first race for Tony Gollan so no doubt she would have come on since then. She’s drawn the outside gate but there looks to be limited speed which will allow Ryan Maloney to get across and find a forward position.
Beachley Belle (9) is on debut for David Vandyke. You know that the stable will have her ready to go. Warmed up for this with a nice trial over 1200m. From barrier 2, she should enjoy a nice run.
Money Bear (5) will appreciate the rise to 1350m second-up. After being bumped at the start, he was doing his best work late over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast on debut when fourth to Sian Star. While well beaten, jockey Mark Du Plessis couldn’t pull him suggesting he wants longer. Has shown early speed in trials so I suspect he can settle closer if trainer Chris Munce wants.
Singer Sargent (3) settled well back after being bumped at the start before running on strongly for second over 1350m at the Gold Coast. It was a good debut run. He’ll be fitter second-up and could settle closer from an inside gate.
On Top Selection: Scat’s Surfer Girl (7)
Race 3 - 2:03PM KINGSLEY LAWSON LAWYERS BM75 Handicap (1666 METRES)
Speed: In Agreement and Alderman will go forward and ensure that the speed is decent.
Alderman (4) has been racing in good form lately with two wins from his past three starts. Last start over 1615m at Doomben he raced on speed and was only run down late by Drive A Deel. Three starts back he controlled the race at Doomben to win. He has a super record at Ipswich and is undefeated in two starts over this course and distance. Will race on the speed and give this a shake.
Gentle Prince (5) fought gamely to just go down over this course and distance last start. He won the start before over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast. Wendy Peel has a great relationship with this horse having won on him four times. Can settle just behind the leaders and charge home.
In Agreement (9) led over this course and distance last start before being run down in the straight by Command King and Gentle Prince to finish third. Never runs a bad race at Ipswich and will again put himself in the race with a forward run.
Spirit’s Charm (7) turned her form around with a win over 1400m at Gatton last start. This is harder but she has raced well here in the past and should enjoy a nice run just off the speed.
On Top Selection: Alderman (4)
Race 4 - 2:43PM THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT QTIS Three-Years-Old Maiden Handicap (1200 METRES)
Speed: Secret Nemo looks the likely leader at a good tempo. Shadyvale Storm from the outside gate and King’s Halo will be prominent.
Gear Changes: Jukebox Glow (9) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, 11. Twyford Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Nose Roll FIRST TIME, Saturday Glory (13) Blinkers FIRST TIME
Secret Memo (8) has run well in both her career starts. She used gas to find the front first-up before finishing fourth to the promising Brookhaven in a good form race. She had her chance last start when dropping back to 1000m to run third at the Sunshine Coast. Those runs will have her ready to produce a good result here. She will give them something to catch.
Banana Slide (5) is on debut for David Vandyke. Worked home well in a trial where she was a half length behind Roadtrip who then won. Respecting the stable and ownership group and expecting a bold showing.
Jukebox Glow (9) went close at the Sunshine Coast two starts back before a competitive 2.1 length fourth last start over this course and distance. Birdonawing was third in that race and has since won. If she gets some luck from an outside gate she can feature.
King’s Halo (3) looks to have come back a better horse this preparation. Raced on the speed over 1100m at Beaudesert when resuming and was beaten a nose. Ben Thompson in the saddle is a positive and should give his mount a great run on the speed.
On Top Selection: Secret Memo (8)
Race 5 - 3:23PM WINNING RUPERT AT GRANDVIEW Fillies and Mares BM65 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: I’m A Foyxgirl will drive forward from the inside gate to potentially lead. Stryking Princess and Emmy Regina won’t be far away.
Gear Changes: Stryking Princess (5) Blinkers AGAIN, Nose Roll AGAIN, I'm A Foxygirl (10) Blinkers OFF AGAIN, Slick Heels (11) Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME
Affogato Girl (6) was very good when running home strongly for second behind Sailor’s Secret over this course and distance last start. She was taking ground off the winner late and that horse has since won easily again. Ryan Maloney should be able to settle handy before getting home hard.
Goldschlager (4) rarely runs a bad race and has finished in the top three in half her 26 starts. Unfortunately, there’s only two wins in there because of her get back style. She has a good record at Ipswich. If there’s early speed, she’ll be charging home over the top of them.
Dream Song (2) is on the quick back-up after an average effort here on Friday. Prior to that she had been racing well including a close second over this course and distance. Drawn to get an economical run.
Set Me Up (7) is building to a win. Last start she settled at the tail of the field over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast before running home well for third behind Better Lad. She’s having her fourth run back after a very long break so fitness should be getting close to peak.
On Top Selection: Affogato Girl (6)
Race 6 - 4:03PM UNDER THE LOUVRE AT GRANDVIEW Colts, Geldings & Entires BM65 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Speed: They should get along here led by Biggie.
Gear Changes: Kinkuna (8) Blinkers OFF AGAIN
Steinbrenner (1) caught the eye when resuming from a 588 day break in the Warwick Newmarket. He settled at the back of the small field before finding the line with gusto to just miss the win. It was a super effort considering the length of time off and the distance being short of his best. He’ll be fitter second-up and the rise in trip suits. Chip Collis’ 3kg claim is beneficial. His form last preparation where he won in town stamps him as the clear horse to beat.
River Rocket (4) resumes here following a 11-week break. He’s run well fresh in the past and has a liking for this course and distance. His last two wins came over this course and distance in March and May this year. He’s competed in stronger so can give a shout.
Harrythetiger (2) won two in a row over 1300m at Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast before finding this class a touch too much last start when dropping in distance. Back to 1350m suits.
Biggie (5) looked the winner at Gatton last start when leading before being run down late. If he can dictate terms in front, he may prove hard to run down.
On Top Selection: Steinbrenner (1)
Race 7 - 4:43PM WHITTINGTON AT GRANDVIEW 0 - 60 Handicap (800 METRES)
Speed: Good speed here with Lively Lass, Haunted House and Good Grab looking to lead.
Gear Changes: Good Grab (1) Hanoverian Nose Band OFF AGAIN, Mah Precious (6) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME, Haunted House (7) Blinkers AGAIN, Bubble Cheeker (Off Side) FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME
Pocketrocket (5) sat three deep when resuming at Kilcoy over 800m. Despite that and laying out on the turn, he still fought out the finish to come third by 1.4 lengths. He does his best work over this short course which includes his only win at Gatton. Gets the benefit of barrier two so should enjoy a great run for Jasmine Cornish who claims 1.5kg.
Mah Precious (6) was found to be shin sore when debuting this time last year. She’s been given plenty of time to get over that and it showed to have benefited when resuming at Stanthorpe with a win. She’ll be fitter second-up but is drawn awkwardly.
I Am Fearless (2) resumes here and has won fresh before. He’s a proven short course speedster having won three of five over the distance. Won’t be far away in the run.
Tisani Emperor (3) resumes here following a 38-week break. He showed great speed to win a 650m trial last month which suggests he may be able to run a cheeky race over 800m here.
On Top Selection: Pocketrocket (5)
Race 8 - 5:19PM NEOREALISM AT GRANDVIEW Class 1 Handicap (1100 METRES)
Speed: They should run along in the final race of the day. Sacred Oath from wide out will go forward along with Hold On Honey.
Gear Changes: Hold On Honey (1) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Sacred Oath (2) Gelded
Hold On Honey (1) is first-up for O’Dea and Hoysted after previously racing with Joe Pride. He’s looked good in two trials ahead of this with the most recent resulting in a win where he showed a clean set of hooves. His form down south puts him right in this.
Sacred Oath (2) resumes following a very good first preparation that saw him win once and place twice from four starts. He looked good in a recent trial to suggest he will fight out the finish if he doesn’t have to burn too much gas early.
Bold Ransom (5) was excellent when winning by a big margin on the Poly. This is harder but he looks to have ability. Given he is nominated for races elsewhere Greg Cornish may scratch after drawing the outside gate.
Enterprise Bella (8) has been racing well this preparation. After finishing second at Beaudesert first-up, she went to the Gold Coast last start and won over 1100m on a heavy track. Back to her home deck she can run well from a good gate.
On Top Selection: Hold On Honey (1)
