Ipswich Preview And Selections 31 August 2022

Date: 30-Aug-2022

The Ipswich Turf Club will host a seven-race metropolitan card this Wednesday. With track renovations taking place throughout September, Wednesday’s meeting will be the last at Bundamba for four weeks.

The track as of Tuesday is rated a Good 4 however, there is the possibility of showers/rain so it will pay to monitor but a downgrade looks likely. The rail is out 10m from the 1350m to the winning post and 8m the remainder.

We have a later starting time of 1:08 pm.

Race 1 - FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: Caesaris looks the likely leader off an inside gate. The early speed should be decent.

Gear Changes: Brydelicious (15) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs OFF FIRST TIME, Flop Turn River (14) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Intoxel (7) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Mrs Patmore (17) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Whisky Train (12) Blinkers FIRST TIME

Caesaris (6) was good on debut when finishing second to Utah Nash over 1200m at Doomben. The Tony Gollan-trained filly showed good early speed to sit handy but just couldn’t reel in the winner. She’ll be fitter and better for the experience. From barrier 2, Angela Jones can lead and give them something to catch. With Jones’ 3kg claim, Caesaris will carry just 54.5kg.

Deferential (1) had no luck last start when finishing 3.2 lengths sixth to Flying Mikki at Doomben over 1200m. After enjoying a nice run just off the speed, he never got clear in the straight when appearing to have plenty to give. He comes here third-up and should be reaching peak fitness. Drawn well and gets the benefit of Jasmine Cornish’s 3kg claim.

Our Heart Throb (3) was out the back and never played a part when resuming at Eagle Farm. I’m prepared to forgive that failure as some horses just don’t handle Eagle Farm. In her only start last preparation, she ran well for third here. Will get back and be running on for Ben Thompson so will need the speed on.

Intoxel (7) was an eye catcher when resuming over 1100m here. She settled a long last before savaging the line to finish third by 1.4 lengths. She’ll be fitter second-up and will appreciate the rise to 1200m.

Plundering also creates interest and a bold showing would not surprise. However, the wide gate is not ideal.

On Top Selection: Caesaris (6)

Race 2 - SIRROMET QTIS Three-Year-Old BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Cocobrew Express looks on paper the only horse capable of leading so speed should only be fair.

Gear Changes: Mishani Mobster (3) Blinkers FIRST TIME

Cocobrew Express (1) is yet to win first-up in two fresh races but gets his chance to change that here. He warmed up for this with a soft trial at Beaudesert. Last preparation he finished 3.85 lengths away from Sheeza Belter in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins after leading. Three starts back he led and won over this course and distance. Jasmine Cornish who claims 3kg can get an uncontested lead and control proceedings. If that eventuates, the pair will be hard to catch.

Plums Akimbo (5) was unlucky when finishing sixth behind Madame Odette over 1200m here last start. He settled handy but was held up behind the leaders in the straight when appearing to have plenty to offer. Angela Jones takes the ride and he will drop to just 52kg with her claim. From barrier 3 he should enjoy a nice run.

Mishani Mobster (3) found the line strongly to just miss the win at the Gold Coast over 1200m two starts back. Last start he settled towards the tail over this course and distance and just had too much work to do when finishing four-lengths behind Aban. With the rail out so far here, he again may find that he has too much work to do. Blinkers going on for the first time may see him settle a touch closer.

On Top Selection: Cocobrew Express (1)

Race 3 - IGA PROUDLY INDEPENDENT Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Early speed here looks good. Dominance, Viking Forever and Struan Lad will all go forward.

Gear Changes: Mrs Patmore (11) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Tullamore Lad (15) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Viking Forever (5) Pads (Front) FIRST TIME

Marleedoone (6) drew wide and settled a long way back when second-up at Doomben over 1350m last start. She had too much work to do from back there but still worked home well for 2.45 length fifth behind Third Time Round. That horse won again impressively here at it’s last start. Suspect Marledoone doesn’t need to settle as far back from a better draw here but she’ll be suited by the strong tempo. Fitter third-up and will carry just 54.5kg after Angela Jones’ claim.

Dominance (8) led them over this course and distance last start but was run down on the line by Aban. He was clearly ahead of the rest of the field. He’ll be fitter third-up and gets the benefit of Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s 1.5kg claim. If he doesn’t have to work too hard from an outside gate then he can fight out the finish.

Son Of Mercury (4) hasn’t been too far away in his two starts back this preparation. Last start he tried hard when finishing third by 2.8 lengths at the Sunshine Coast over 1200m. Third-up looks ready for 1350m. A positive sign is Tony Gollan assigning the ride to top hoop Ryan Maloney. Should race on speed from the good gate.

Viking Forever (5) put in his best performance last start when narrowly beaten at the Gold Coast over 1350m. He led for all but the final stages when picked off in the shadows of the post. He may have been favoured by the heavy track but that effort may give him some confidence. He should race on the speed.

On Top Selection: Marleedoone (6)

Race 4 - IGA, LOCALS SUPPORTING LOCALS Fillies and Mares Class 2 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: There looks to be an abundance of early speed here with a handful of horses capable of going forward.

Gear Changes: Champagne Tastes (10) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Nose Roll FIRST TIME, Hakkai Maru (2) Pacifiers FIRST TIME, Squeeze Dis (11) Blindfold FIRST TIME, Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME

Moreton Bay (3) resumed with a very good effort over this course and distance. After drawing wide, she worked early to sit outside the lead. She fought well but the talented Reeanon was too strong for her late. She was beaten half a length in second but was clearly ahead of the rest. Last preparation she won second-up so expect her to be improved here. She again draws wide but there’s only ten in the field and I woudl suggest she has the speed to get across and find a spot. Angela Jones’ 3kg claim is advantageous.

Ahika (4) has been racing in consistent form. She won easily to break her maiden two starts back before going to Doomben last start and finishing second in Saturday company to Liza With A Zee. She has since won a trial to tune her up for this. Should race on the speed for Mark Du Plessis.

Lady Rain (5) broke through for her first win when resuming over this course and distance last start. It won’t be easy stepping up from a maiden to a Class 2 but she’ll strip fitter and gets the benefit of the inside gate. Definitely respecting the Annabel Neasham stable.

Hakkai Maru (2) resumes here on the back of two trials, the most recent she won well. Last preparation she chased home Kingston’s Here in stronger company to finish 2.9 lengths away. She has the early speed but she’s untested over this trip so she may be vulnerable late.

On Top Selection: Moreton Bay (3)

Race 5 - IGA LOCALS MATTER Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 2 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: Tikka Ready and Early Crow should be able to drive forward and lead from the inside two gates.

Gear Changes: Celestial Sol (5) Cross-over Nose Band OFF FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Early Crow (9) Brow Band FIRST TIME, Sidewalk (15) Bandages (Front) FIRST TIME, Tuscany Bound (7) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME

Clairvue Star (4) finished fourth by just under a length over this course and distance last start. It was an ugly race to watch with a number of horses not getting a clear shot in the run home. This guy was one of them. He was held up on the turn and then didn’t get a lot of clear air on the fence running home. That was a Class 3 and he now drops back to a Class 2. From barrier 3, Kyle Wilson-Taylor should be able to stalk the speed.

Ned’s Gully (6) steps up to 1200m for the first time. Two starts back he avoided a fall at Toowoomba to charge home and win over 1100m. Last start he shot up the fence late to finish a length behind Be Water My Friend in a Saturday Class 3 Plate at Doomben over 1050m. The extra distance should suit him. He’ll get back and look to run on.

Snazz ‘N’ Charm (1) is never far away but unfortunately generally gets too far back in his races. He impressed two starts back running on strongly for second behind Snappy Reply before again finishing off well for fourth over this course and distance. He’ll need the speed on to help him get home over the top of them.

Tikka Ready (10) had failed in stronger class races before dropping back to a Class 1 last start and winning nicely at the Gold Coast. Both his wins have come on his home track with a stable representative suggesting he prefers racing there after his last win. He’ll go forward from the nice draw and give them something to catch.

On Top Selection: Clairvue Star (4)

Race 6 - TRIVIA NIGHT 16 SEPTEMBER Class 4 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Speed: Good speed engaged here with Camerlengo, Magnitudo and Skilord all pressing forward early.

Gear Changes: Canexcell (1) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Skilord (8) has been racing in terrific form since joining the Currie stable. Last start he worked from a wide gate to fight out the finish over 1050m at Doomben in a Saturday Class 3 Plate. Prior to that he won two in a row including a 7.3 length romp at Toowoomba over 1100m. He’s drawn a touch awkwardly but possesses the early speed to find a spot. With Angela Jones’ claim, he’ll carry just 53kg.

Magnitudo (2) won at Doomben over 1050m three starts back before finishing runner-up at his past two starts. Last start he raced on the speed over 1200m here before being swamped on the line. The drop back to 1100m won’t worry him and he did win his only other start over the course and distance. He’ll go forward for Michael Murphy.

Rich Lister (3) drew poorly when resuming at Doomben over 1110m last start and it proved costly. He’ll be fitter for the run and will appreciate returning to Ipswich where he has won three of four starts. He can return to form here.

King’s Express (7) was given a peach of a ride by Michael Cahill to win over this course and distance last start. He rises from a Class 1 to a Class 4 which doesn’t make things easy. Nor does the wide gate.

On Top Selection: Skilord (8)

Race 7 - IEEC.COM.AU BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: There’s good speed in the final race of the day. Nishikori can lead from the inside gate. Sailing and Archdeacon can also push forward.

Gear Changes: Irukandji (2) Cross-over Nose Band OFF FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF AGAIN

Archdeacon (8) has run well his past two starts. Two starts back he was narrowly beaten by Vaccine who impressed when winning on Saturday at Eagle Farm. Last start he ran on fairly behind Beaux Rumble who was very good when second to the talented Manhood on Friday on Gold Coast Cup day. He draws wide but has the speed to go forward and carries just 52.5kg after Jasmine Cornish’s 3kg claim.

Nishikori (1) comes here looking for a hat trick of wins. Two back he romped in on the Poly. Last start he finished off strongly to win over 1350m at Doomben. Mob Buster finished third that day and that horse won at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Brodie Loy will use barrier 1 to his advantage and look to lead. He is disadvantaged by having to lump 60kg.

He Knows (5) finished third by 4.5 lengths behind Bundyandcoke when resuming at Eagle Farm over 1200m. That race has proven to be a great form reference with three horses winning since it and two of those finishing behind He Knows. He’ll strip fitter second-up.

Tricology (12) didn’t handle the wet Gold Coast track when having his first run for Kelly Schweida. He was five weeks between runs so will be fitter here. Expecting improvement on a drier surface.

On Top Selection: Archdeacon (8)
