Ipswich Preview And Selections 5 October 2022

Date: 04-Oct-2022

Racing returns to the Ipswich Turf Club this Wednesday with an eight-race card. It’s been five weeks since we hosted a meeting with the track recently undergoing refurbishment works. The track as of Tuesday is rated a Soft 7 and with mostly cloudy weather forecast, it may improve a touch but will remain in the soft range. The rail is out 0.5m the entire course.

The first race is scheduled to start at 1:18 pm.

Race 1 - THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT Maiden Handicap (1666 METRES)

Speed: There looks to be good speed engaged in the opening event. Saint Bartholomew and Cherokee Girl will drive forward from outside gates while Sureel and Dragon Song pushing up on the inside.

Gear Changes: Dragon Song (10) Hanoverian Nose Band FIRST TIME, Saint Bartholomew  (3) Blinkers OFF AGAIN, 1. Sarsen Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Sarsen (1) was beaten in a bobbing finish when resuming at the Gold Coast over 1350m. He was then forced wide when turning for home last start at Doomben over 1650m before running on well for second behind Dutch Gold. Dutch Gold had been racing in super form. He’ll be fitter third-up and gets the benefit of a tongue tie. Jimmy Orman can settle just off what looks like a strong speed before getting home strongly.

Saint Bartholomew (3) resumed with a solid performance at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m. He drew wide and never got on the track but boxed on fairly for a 2.6 length sixth behind Kinetic. He again draws wide but has the early speed to cross and find a spot. He’ll be fitter second-up.

Hot Sauce (6) should be ready to fire third-up. She hit the line hard first-up to just miss before again running on well for a narrow fourth behind Kinetic over 1400m last start at the Sunshine Coast. The outside gate is far from ideal.

American Jazz (4) looked like a horse that needed further when debuting over 1350m at Doomben. He settled back and was held up in the straight but got home fairly for a 3.8 length ninth behind Kronenbourg. The rise to 1666m should suit.

On Top Selection: Sarsen (1)

Race 2 - THIS IS A CONVERSATION STARTER RACEDAY 28 OCTOBER Class 6 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: Daltoro and Acrobatic look most likely to go forward in a race that looks devoid of early speed. It must be noted that both these horses are nominated for other races later in the week.

Gear Changes: Acrobatic (2) Blinkers AGAIN, Pacifiers OFF FIRST TIME

Joy Too All (6) resumes here following a 12-week break. She’s had two soft trials to prepare her for this. While she finished at the back of both trials, there’s no need to worry as that’s been the case in each of her past few preparations and she’s come out and won first-up. She flies fresh and is four from five on soft going. From barrier 1, Ryan Maloney should be able to give her a sweet run.

Acrobatic (2) has been racing in stronger Saturday races than this. Last start at Toowoomba over 1200m he endured a tough run but still worked home well only to be blocked late in the straight. He ended up 2.3 lengths behind Be Water My Friend who is flying. He should get a nice run on the speed. Blinkers going back on a positive.

Daltoro (3) was held up at a crucial stage in the run home last start at Doomben over 1050m. After coming off two sets of heels he rattled home for third behind Proper Rogue. Slight question mark over him running out a 1200m but the lack of speed will aid him as Andrew Mallyon can dictate the tempo.

Lord Markel (1) revelled in the heavy going when romping in by five-lengths first-up at the Gold Coast over 1100m. That made it three wins in a row. He rises in class and may find these a bit sharp but he will benefit from the sting out of the track.

On Top Selection: Joy Too All (6)

Race 3 - MELBOURNE CUP LUNCH TICKETS ON SALE Class 3 Handicap (1666 METRES)

Speed: Brazen Breccia can go forward from an outside gate to lead. Dis Go Boom and Daintree Diva will look to hold him out from inside draws.

Brazen Breccia (1) didn’t handle the heavy Gold Coast track when finishing a long last over 1700m last start. I’m prepared to look past that run given the wet track didn’t suit. Prior to that run, he won three in a row including his maiden here. Two starts back he pulled out plenty to win over this trip at the Sunshine Coast. Ryan Maloney can go forward and give them something to catch.

Goldschlager (5) has caused her owners plenty of heartbreak during her career with her get back and run onto place style. She’s been in the placings in two of her past three starts. Her last win was over this course and distance in December last year and looks a good opportunity to get another win. Sam Collett can settle closer than normal over the longer trip and finish off hard with the light weight.

Dutch Gold (3) had been racing well but without luck prior to breaking through last start. He finished off strongly to win over 1650m at Doomben by 2.25 lengths. He rises from a maiden to a Class 3 which won’t be easy but he looks to have ability.

A Big Chance (4) won in easier company over this distance two starts back at the Sunshine Coast. He’s on the quick back-up after running on well for a half length second again over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast. In good form but may have too much ground to make up in the straight.

On Top Selection: Brazen Breccia (1)

Race 4 - BASE METAL FABRICATION Class 2 Handicap (1000 METRES)

Speed: A good tempo should be set with Songzillla and Diamond Lass going forward from outside gates. There is plenty of speed drawn inside.

Gear Changes: Refero (2) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Zavaboom (1) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit FIRST TIME

Zavaboom (1) resumes here following a 17-week spell. He was last seen running off the track in the Queensland Day Stakes and finishing a distant last. He’s a quality gelding who competed in some very good three-year-old races. While he hasn’t been seen at the trials leading into this, he is two from two first-up and there is no doubt Tony Gollan will have him ready to fire. Jimmy Orman can settle just off the speed from the good gate.

Refero (2) is returning to the track after spending 43-weeks in the paddock. He’s shown talent at times in his career like when he defeated Enterprise Pomme but he needs to be taken on trust after such a long break and no public trials. He is undefeated in two fresh runs.

Prince Amongst Men (4) will appreciate dropping back to 1000m four weeks between runs. At his past two starts over 1200m he’s gone too hard in front and weakened in the closing stages. Three starts back he won over 1100m here. He’ll go forward and look the winner in the straight.

Sacca (3) resumes here on the back off two solid trials. He’s a consistent galloper who has won fresh early in his career. Drawn to get a decent run.

On Top Selection: Zavaboom (1)

Race 5 - SIRROMET QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Guru Class and Birdonawing should duel for the lead. Simple Way can cross from the outside gate to be prominent.

Gear Changes: Accelerated Growth (1) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Gelded, Ideelic (3) Gelded, Redvedev (10) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Toba (4) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Birdonawing (7) resumed at Doomben over 1350m and was in it for a long way. She led and only weakened in the closing stages to finish 1.65 lengths behind Narnia. The second horse, Boom Court, was beaten by a whisker in town on Saturday. While she’s drawn out, she has the early speed to go forward for Steph Thornton and either lead or be handy. She’ll be fitter second-up.

Ideelic (3) is on debut for David Vandyke. He warmed up for this with a solid trial where he cruised around for a 2.3 length fourth. The stable can get them to fire fresh and the appointment of Ryan Maloney is a good indicator.

Jukebox Glow (9) looks close to a win. She duked it out with Western Halo all the way up the Sunshine Coast straight to go down on the line over 1400m. This will be her fourth run this preparation so she should be at peak fitness.

Guru Clas (8) looked really good in a tickover trial recently. Prior to that she finished runner-up over 1100m at Gatton and then on the Poly. The Jack Bruce stable is flying and this filly should enjoy a nice run on the speed from the good gate.

On Top Selection: Birdonawing (7)

Race 6 - OXLEY GOLF CLUB BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Speed: They should move quickly here with a number of speedy types engaged. Bobby Axelrod off the inside, Cossie and Royal Nicci look the pacesetters.

Gear Changes: Ben Hur (14) Bubble Cheeker (Near Side) OFF FIRST TIME, Tongue Control Bit OFF AGAIN

Royal Nicci (11) was good when resuming with a second at Eagle Farm to Amity Gal. She then went to the Sunshine Coast where she put on a display of speed. After drawing wide over 1000m she found the front easily and dashed clear to win with something in hand. She ran quicker time than the Class 4 on the same day. From the good gate, Steph Thornton will give her every chance to go back-to-back.

Litermont (12) is a newcomer to the Gollan stable. The former Victorian was fair in a trial leading into this. Won two of six down south and gets the benefit of Ang Jones’ 3kg claim. Just needs to be forward enough to feature.

The Billionaire (1) can be a frustrating conveyance but has raced well at Ipswich in recent starts. He won over 800m here three back before finishing second over this distance in stronger company two starts ago. The downside is that he has to carry 61kg.

Cossie (4) will race on the speed and give her backers a sight. Won in heavy conditions two starts ago at the Gold Coast over 1200m. Drawn to get a nice run for 3kg claimer Yvette Lewis.

On Top Selection: Royal Nicci (11)

Race 7 - NUTURF BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Bushido and Archdeacon should ensure that the speed is decent.

Gear Changes: Avenue Of Stars (2) Concussion Plates (Front) OFF FIRST TIME, Bushido (1)  Blinkers AGAIN, Hail To The Chief (4) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME, Mensa Maestro (10) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME

Avenue Of Stars (2) prefers the sting out of the ground and will get that here. Two starts back he finished a long last at Eagle Farm where no doubt he didn’t appreciate the firm track. Either side of that run, he won convincingly at the Gold Coast on soft and heavy tracks. He also led on each of those occasions so I expect Jag Guthmann-Chester to settle handy here.

He’s The News (5) appreciated the rise to 1350m last start at Doomben. He finished off strongly and looked the winner but was swamped on the line. Taylor Marshall can stalk the speed before launching late.

Platini (3) gave too much start away but ran on strongly to finish third to Moreton Bay at Doomben over 1200m last start. He’ll appreciate the rise to 1350m here. He finally draws a gate which should see him enjoy an economical run.

A Call From Heaven (8) just can’t draw a gate and again finds herself out near Bundamba Creek. Last start she drew barrier 13 at Doomben and ran on solidly for a close fourth. The start prior she sprinted strongly to win nicely over this course and distance. If gets some luck from the gate she’ll be fighting out the finish.

On Top Selection: Avenue Of Stars (2)

Race 8 - ICARE SUPPORT SERVICES Class 1 Plate (1350 METRES)

Speed: Night Vision will lead with company from Memorial Day from the outside gate. Speed should be genuine.

Gear Changes:  Atlantic Royal (17) Bubble Cheeker (Off Side) FIRST TIME, Grenado (3) Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Norton Bit FIRST TIME, Military Gambler (6) Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME, Savagal (11) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Scorch The Turf (18) Blinkers AGAIN, Lugging Bit OFF AGAIN, Tongue Control Bit AGAIN, Style Seeker (8) Cross-over Nose Band FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME

Narnia (15) was another example of a Sydney horse showing an instant improvement when coming to Queensland. After finishing last at Wyong when resuming, this Annabel Neasham colt came to Doomben and sprinted strongly to win over 1350m. He can go on with it now. With so many stayers resuming in this, he can enjoy a nice run in the first few pairs.

Very Intoxicating (13) was well supported when running on strongly to miss out in a head bobber last start at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m. She won her maiden the start prior. Looks a decent mare but has been given no favours with an outside gate.

Military Gambler (6) will probably need the run first-up given he is better over a trip. However, his class alone will take him a long way here. Finished runner-up in several Saturday three-year-old races last preparation. Watch for him finishing off.

Naughty Harry (7) resumes here following a 32-week spell. There must have been an issue last start when finishing well down the track in a Saturday three-year-old race over 1600m. He won in nice style the start prior on debut. He’s had a soft trial leading into this and the Vandyke/Maloney combination has to be respected.

On Top Selection: Narnia (15)
