Former Queensland and Australian Rugby League legend Gorden Tallis was on course at Ipswich on Thursday to watch a horse race that is part-owned by his mother.
The horse in question is the speedy Mr Galazi who took part in the BASE METAL FABRICATION Class 4 Handicap over 800m.
The David Murphy-trained four-year-old gelding was returning to Ipswich for the second time after winning a Class 4 Handicap over this scamper trip in April.
Punters had Thursday’s race down to a two-horse affair between Mr Galazi (SP $2.45) and the resuming Matilly (SP $1.85).
And that’s exactly how the race panned out.
With the benefit of the inside gate, Mr Galazi’s jockey Georgie Cartwright was able to hold the fence with Matilly on her immediate outside.
The pair settled in for a dog fight all the way up the straight but with race fitness on his side, Mr Galazi was able to get up by a nose.
Tallis revealed that the win was made all the more special as it would lift the spirits of his mother who is in hospital.
“I’m not really into racehorses but it was good for mum as she’s in hospital at the moment,” Tallis said.
“It was good to come out and watch her horse run.
“This is our fifth horse with ‘Murph’.
“He’s a great little trainer and the horses seem to get up every now and then which makes it better.”
The win took Mr Galazi’s record to four wins from eight starts and kept his unbeaten record at Ipswich intact.
Amazingly, his wins have come at every second start.
Murphy believes that the son of Sir Prancelot has the scope to continue to improve.
“He’s a good horse that just keeps running,” Murphy said.
“If he can find the front, he’s ok but if he gets behind them then he’s in a bit of trouble as he gets out of whack.
“He’s still learning so he may get better.”
The Brisbane Broncos great known as the ‘Raging Bull’ was very happy he made the trip to Ipswich to be a part of the victory.
“It’s a beautiful day out at Ipswich,” Tallis exclaimed.
“The beers are cold, the weather’s warm...what more could you want?”
We couldn’t have said it better Gordie!
