Meeting In Review – Friday 23 August 2024 New

Date: 26-Aug-2024

Nine races were run and won on Friday at Ipswich where Jimmy Orman and Noel Callow helped themselves to winning riding doubles.

Orman was last season’s leading Ipswich jockey and got his title defence on track in the Maiden Plate over 1200m with Cash Landing.

The Tony Gollan-trained was facing the starter for the second time after finishing a close fifth over the course and distance last month.

Orman drove forward on the son of Capitalist to lead before giving a kick at the top of the straight and dashing clear to win easily by 1.4 lengths.

Blinkers going on made a big difference and he never looked like losing.

The win provided Gollan with a share of the Ipswich Trainers premiership with Matt Dunn.

The leading hoop teamed up with his mother Caroline Allardyce and Dirt Cheap to claim the Benchmark 62 Handicap.

Following a win at Gatton and a close second at Doomben, the four-year-old gelding looked tough to beat in the 1350m contest.

Orman settled outside the lead before giving Dirt Cheap his head entering the straight.

He was challenged by Admonish but the son of Sepoy produced plenty late to kick clear and win by 1.3 lengths.

Noel Callow will be happy with the outcome following his first visit to Ipswich this season.

The larrikin jockey claimed a race-to-race double with the first of his wins coming in the 1350m Class 1 Handicap.

Callow partnered the Lindsay Hatch-trained Dream Lantern and delivered an easy payday for connections with the Toowoomba mare putting her rivals to the sword by 3.5 lengths.

In the following race, Callow put Chayse ‘N’ Artie’s staying prowess to good use when he took off from the Great Northern sign to round up his rivals and win the 1350m race by just under a length.

Plundering was a sick beat in the race with Jimmy Orman unable to get the favourite in clear air despite it being a field of just six.

A minor miracle was witnessed in the opening race of the day over 2200m when Taranaki finally broke through for his first win at start number nine.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding had been beaten as a short favourite on numerous occasions including as $1.30 hot pot here in February.

However, Friday was his day with Ryan Maloney getting the most out of him in a driving finish to win by 0.6L.

There’s a log jam at the top of the 2024/25 Ipswich Jockey premiership with four riders sharing the lead.

Apprentices Bailey Wheeler and Tahlia Fenlon are two of those and each scored a win on Friday.

Talented young gun Wheeler got Without Delay’s nose down right on the line to win the Maiden Plate over 1200m by a nose.

The Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald-trained Without Delay was on debut.

Coming off riding a double at our last meeting, Fenlon added her third win of the season when she got the best out of Chances With Wolves over 1700m in the Benchmark 62 Handicap.

The Jan Aitkenhead-trained gelding was on a quick back-up after narrowly missing the win at our meeting last Monday.

Coffs Harbour trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith was rewarded for making the trip to Ipswich with Sammy Conquers All taking out QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate.

Ryan Wiggins gave the son of Love Conquers All a great run just as he did in 2014 when wearing the same colours to victory in the Group 1 BTC Cup.

Last season’s leading apprentice Emily Lang rounded out the card when she guided Catwalk Criminal to the winner’s stall for Gold Coast trainer Adam Campton.

Racing takes a short break at Ipswich until Thursday the 19th of September while the track undergoes renovation.
