Meeting In Review – Tuesday 7 January 2025 New

Date: 08-Jan-2025

On short notice, we stepped in to host a seven-race program on Tuesday where there was a clear theme, winning doubles.

Damien Thornton, Kyle Wilson-Taylor and the Neasham & Archibald stable all helped themselves to two wins on the day.

Thornton got on the board early when he teamed up with the Kris Lees-trained Wollzeile.

With the late scratching of Whatta Mission, the Tassort filly started a $1.45 favourite in the opening event of the day for two-year-olds.

The 2x G1 winning jockey took bad luck out of the equation by taking up the running.

The result was never in danger as she cruised to a 4.5 length win.

Thornton’s second win came aboard Facundo in the Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap over 1200m.

While the final margin of 4.5 lengths suggested that it was as easy a ride as he had on Wollzeile, the reality was the gelding had a few tricks for Thornton to deal with.

The Kelly Schweida-trained three-year-old raced as green as a billiard table, most noticeably not handling the home turn and ending up in the middle of the track, but he’s blessed with an abundance of ability and that delivered him the win.

Wilson-Taylor registered his first win for the day in the Class 2 Handicap over 1350m with Ioane.

The Stu Kendrick-trained gelding jumped in the air as the gates opened and found himself second last in the run.

Ioane let down powerfully in the straight to win by a neck and had to contend with So Bute who raised a strong effort under Mark Du Plessis.

Deputize provided Wilson-Taylor with his second win when he saluted by 1.16 lengths in the final race of the day over 1100m.

The Neasham & Archibald-trained gelding was given a perfect steer by Wilson-Taylor and won comfortably so it was hard to fathom why there was a market drift.

Deputize’s win was the second of a race-to-race double for the Eagle Farm training partnership.

Just 40 minutes earlier, Autumn Miss won the BM60 Handicap over 1660m for the duo.

Aided by a solid speed by Connecticut, the daughter of The Autumn Sun was able to sit off the pace for Dan McGillivray before running on strongly to win by just under a length.

Fresh off an Ipswich four-timer on Saturday, Justin Huxtable reduced Angela Jones’ Jockey Premiership lead to just one when he rode Never Give Up to victory.

The Corey & Kylie Geran-trained five-year-old flies fresh and that was again the case on Wednesday with him charging home to take his record to three wins from four first-up races.

Apprentice Jace McMurray joined Huxtable on nine winners for the Ipswich season when he overcame being held up in the straight and then a late surge by Daisy’s Pride to deliver Lindsay Hatch a win with Chemiosmosis.

Barring any late scheduling changes, we will host our next meeting on Wednesday, January 15.
