It was a case of rinse and repeat at Wednesday’s metropolitan meeting at Ipswich.
Just as he did last Wednesday, seven-time Ipswich premiership winning trainer Tony Gollan left the Bundamba circuit with a treble.
The Eagle Farm conditioner claimed his first win in the Seven Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate over 1350m with Power Flash.
The four-year-old mare was having her eighth start and showed good speed out of the barriers to lead for Angela Jones.
Last year’s leading Ipswich apprentice rated her mount beautifully before booting clear in the straight to win by 2.16 lengths.
Power Flash was heavily backed from $12 into $7.50.
Kinetic provided Gollan with win number two when she won the Schweppes Benchmark 68 Handicap.
The daughter of I Am Invincible was given a peach of a ride by Ryan Maloney before getting to the outside and letting down powerfully to win by 1.83 lengths.
The win was her first since winning nearly a year to the day ago at Eagle Farm.
Gollan wrapped up his winning treble with stable newcomer Pizarro in the Class 3 Plate over 1200m.
The five-year-old gelding was beautifully placed and looked hard to beat based on his superior Sydney form.
The race panned out as expected with the former Sydneysider finishing off strongly to win by just over half a length.
Gollan’s three wins extended his lead to six in this year’s Ipswich Trainers premiership and puts him firmly in the driver’s seat to win his eighth title.
Jones and Maloney shared the jockey honours across the eight-race card with two wins a piece.
Before winning aboard Power Flash, Jones won the opening race of the day in the steward’s room.
She teamed up with the Mark Currie-trained Rhumb Line who was beaten a nose, but Jones alleged there was interference approaching the 200m mark that cost her the victory.
Stewards agreed and reversed the result.
Maloney enjoyed a race-to-race double when Mannerheim overcame the outside gate in the Gordon’s Gin Class 1 Plate.
It was another excellent ride by Maloney who settled back before getting the Chris Waller-trained gelding to the outside where his mount went through his gears nicely to win by just over a length.
Favourite backers had a day out with five of the races won by short-priced commodities.
Along with Kinetic, Mannerheim and Pizarro, Taltarni Fields and Flaming Conquest also proved too strong as popular elects.
The Kelly Schweida-trained Taltarni Fields had been knocking on the door for a maiden win and emphatically did so with an all the way 2.65 length win over 1200m.
Just as she did last preparation, Flaming Conquest won over our 800m course.
She was backed as if she was almost unbeatable and while it wasn’t an easy watch, she got the job done.
Racing returns to Ipswich next Monday the 6th of May where we expect a big crowd on track for our Labour Day Races meeting.
