THIS week’s metropolitan fixture will be our fifth meeting back at Ipswich since the August track renovation.
The rail moves out to the 6m position this week and the surface underfoot is expected to be similar to last week where the meeting was conducted on a Good 4 track throughout.
Once again we have eight races to be run on the card and field sizes are strong across the day, with more than 110 acceptors.
Hot streaks
At the four meetings conducted since the return at Ipswich, Jimmy Orman has been in terrific form, winning six races from just 19 rides.
Bailey Wheeler, Damien Thornton and Jag Guthmann-Chester have each ridden three winners across the four meetings.
Cejay Graham, Emily Land and Georgie Cartwright are the other riders to post multiple wins over the past month at Ipswich.
Amongst the training ranks, the spoils have been more evenly shared.
Tony Gollan unsurprisingly tops the training ranks with three wins across the four meetings, but he shares that spot with Scott Morrissey, who has accumulated his tally from just seven runners.
Kelly Schweida and Annabel Neasham are the other trainers to land multiple wins since the club’s return to racing.
No less than 26 individual trainers have netted an Ipswich winner since the first meeting back on September 15.
Blake’s move
Blake Spriggs has been based in Queensland a month now and he’s shown enough with limited chances to suggest he’s going to be a rider punters can back with confidence.
On face value, Spriggs’ four wins from 27 rides since making the move is okay without being spectacular. But when you consider those winners were at starting price odds of $4.80, $5.50, $13 and $41, you get a better feel for how he might be outperforming the market.
Spriggs has had just one ride on a horse rated shorter than $3.50 in the market. Conversely, 17 of his 27 rides have started at $12 or longer in the market. So it’s fair to say he’s making the most of any opportunities that are coming his way.
I would suggest you can back him with confidence on one you fancy. He has just two mounts for Ipswich on Wednesday, with A Dime Approach at $11 in race 2 and Ardern the early $4.60 favourite in the fourth event.
Finding a winner
OBEROI PRINCESS (Race 1, $3.20) was able to overcome a drop in distance from 1200m to 1000m to make it back-to-back wins at the Sunshine Coast last time and now goes back to 1200m, where she was super impressive two starts back. This is not a bad little race, but she should land in the first three or four and be hard to beat again.
SHY GUY (Race 2, $2.30) is only lightly raced and seems to be improving with each run. His Doomben placing two starts back was good enough for this and he showed he hadn’t gone backwards with a solid effort when up in grade in the Toowoomba Guineas last start.
ARDERN (Race 4, $4.60) has struck a couple of races where they’ve run very good figures for Maiden grade. This doesn’t look to have any stars and this looks a suitable race for her to break through in.
